Overview
It is now recognized that the protection of biological diversity is one of our core societal tasks. As early as 1993, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity came into force. In 2011, the European Commission published a Biodiversity Strategy with the aim of halting the loss of biodiversity in the European Community by 2020. Conservation and enhancement of ecosystems are among the objectives formulated here. The federal government and the German states have also underpinned this objective with their own strategies.
Numerous activities, such as aid programs, conservation projects and campaigns, are aimed at halting the loss of biodiversity and improving the living conditions and social appreciation of native species.
Together with municipalities and agriculture, the Local Landcare Associations organized in the umbrella organisation Landcare Germany implement such projects and campaigns.
